NEMS Community Project

Background: With the help of 26 mosaic artists from around the world, mosaic artist (and member), Amanda Edwards, created an alphabet mural on the dining room wall of the Ronald McDonald House in Portland, ME. The Ronald McDonald House is a home away from home for families of children staying at the children’s hospital in Portland. Each letter mosaic of her project includes a word that represents love, family, or healing.

Phase II: 35 members of the New England Mosaic Society have created a mosaic leaf for the mural. The installation has been done by NEMS members from Maine. On June 9th, we are planning a trip to the Ronald McDonald house to view the wall and check out the art scene in Portland, ME.  See the description below to sign up!

Being an artist isn’t all mind-blowing ideas, exhilarating in-the-zone allnighters, and getting sought out by dream clients. It’s also waiting, schlepping,  isolation, mistakes, housecleaning, choice paralysis, self-doubt, admisistrivia, and other unsexy aspects that can be serious creativity buzzkills. In this lively, fun presentation Kelley offers a raft of practical tips, exercises and strategies to re-spark confidence and creativity and keep you in touch with your passion for your practice.

Portland Maine Art Tour

New date!  Saturday June 9th

11:00 AM–  Amanda’s Studio in Cape Elizabeth Maine for coffee, tea, snacks, and meet and greet. Early arrivals are encouraged to walk on the beach (at the end of Amanda’s road!), a wonderful spot for finding beach glass, drift wood, and treasures for mosaics.
On our way to Ronald McDonald House, will stop at Portland Headlight, for a quick look at one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world.
12:15: Arriving at Ronald McDonald House. Everyone will have a chance to see their mosaics in the mural, take photos, and then there will be a tour of the facilities given by the director of RMH.
1:00: Heading to downtown Portland for lunch and a walking tour of Portland’s Old Port and Art’s District. Everyone will be given a map marked with all of the many galleries in downtown. Amanda will be leading an “Art of Portland”  tour, but if you want to head off on your own to explore the city, that’s ok too!
4:00: The group will meet back up and we’ll be on our way to Allagash Beer, where Amanda has installed a 92′ long floor mosaic along the mezzanine overlooking their bottling facility. The folks at Allagash are putting together a special tour for the NEMS group. Sampling is encouraged, but optional.
For those spending the night (or longer) in Portland, feel free to contact Amanda for a list of not-to-be-missed restaurants, galleries, shops, and natural wonders!
