NEMS Community Project
Background: With the help of 26 mosaic artists from around the world, mosaic artist (and member), Amanda Edwards, created an alphabet mural on the dining room wall of the Ronald McDonald House in Portland, ME. The Ronald McDonald House is a home away from home for families of children staying at the children’s hospital in Portland. Each letter mosaic of her project includes a word that represents love, family, or healing.
Phase II: Now it’s time to complete the mural wall with a painted tree with mosaic heart-shaped leaves. This is where you come in. The New England Mosaic Society is looking for up to 35 members to each create a mosaic leaf for the mural. The installation will be done by NEMS members from Maine. In April, we are planning a trip to the Ronald McDonald house to view the wall and check out the art scene in Portland, ME.
2. February 17, 2018: Installation of the leaves by Maine NEMS members
3. April 14, 2018: Portland Art Tour View the wall and visit art galleries and public art in Portland, ME. More info to come, but sign up now so we can get a head count!
Portland Art Tour
Our day will start with a meet and greet at the studio of AmandaEdwards, in Cape Elizabeth Maine, just outside of Portland. We’ll leave the studio, and on our way to Portland we’ll stop to see one of the world’s most famous light houses, Portland Headlight. Then, we’ll be going to the Ronald McDonald House to see the completed mosaic tree mural that NEMS members contributed a leaf to. After the RMH, we’ll head to Portland’s Old Port for a walking tour of it’s many galleries and boutiques. Portland Maine’s Old Port is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is known for it’s cobblestone streets, galleries, boutiques, working waterfront, restaurants and 19th century brick buildings. While in Portland, we will have lunch on the waterfront. Finally, we’ll be heading to Allagash beer for a special tour, which includes a 92 foot long floor mosaic installation completed by Amanda Edwards. Beer sampling is not required, but encouraged! Cost for the day $15 per person, (payable to Amanda upon arrival), plus the cost of lunch.
